Tidbits: Antique Thailand Jewelry History  

In old Asia, before banks were omnipresent, silver and gold were money.  Jewelry pieces were silver and gold; so for both men and women, their bodies were like banks.  The more wealth you had, the more silver and gold you wore .  When you needed money, you sold off what you had on you as you wanted, or needed.  As coins of gold, silver and copper were universally accepted by weight worldwide, so was jewelry, but mostly silver and gold.

Some old pieces can be found, but have been converted into modern style use and adaptations, including loops and posts where able to be attached and still retain the old beauty. Some of these pieces are as they were originally, but some have been adapted to modern ways. 

As men had to work, more women were ‘banks’ than men were, so the form of ‘bank accounts’ became the lady of the house’s jewelry.   Labor for silver and gold-making was cheap.  People did not think of making jewelry as labor as it was deemed a small cost of the item. Antique jewelry then, was in fact, another form of money.  Jewelry motifs took on symbols of culture, religion and good fortune and health so people felt good about wearing them.   Silver and gold quality ranged from pure to base.
