Dangerous Minerals _____________________________________
Dangerous minerals are often beautiful, and can be enjoyed if treated with respect. When in doubt, wear gloves and wash your hands often! Below is some research about dangerous minerals. However, please research very carefully your minerals. We advise that all Elixir work should be done with caution and careful research.

Coloradoite
Coloradoite is a mercury tellurite compound and toxic when handled. If heated or chemically altered, the deadly vapor or dust released is dangerous. Tellurium minerals may contain gold, so don't be fooled into removing this gold.
Chalcanthite
Beautiful crystals are composed of copper combined with sulfur and other elements. This combination turns copper into a bio-available crystal (water soluble) which consumed in quantities by plants or animals, will weaken or kill the plant/animal by shutting down body processes. NEVER taste for salt content.
Hutchinsonite
This mineral contains thallium which is highly toxic. The effects of thallium exposure are loss of hair, serious illness through skin contact and some cases death. Hutchinsonsite is a cocktail mixture of thallium, lead and arsenic.
Galena
Asbestos Chrysotile and Amphibolite
Asbestos is well known for lung damage to humans due to its tiny fibrous crystals that can become airborne and lodged in the lungs.
Arsenopyrite
Like Fool's Gold, but with a difference. It is an arsenic iron sulfide (same type of mineral as pyrite) but with a heavy additive of arsenic. Do not heat or alter this mineral in any way. You can find a heavy garlic odor can be found when striking this mineral with a hammer. Wear gloves when handling.
Torbernite
Prism green crystals, beautiful to collectors, but formed from secondary deposits from granitic rocks and are composed of uranium.
Stibite
Stibnite is a sulfide and causes food poisoning. Handle with caution to avoid poisoning. Wear gloves or hand washing is suggested after handling Stibite.
Orpiment
Orpiment contains arsenic and sulfur. Holding these crystals may release carcinogenic, neurotoxin arsenic powers. Orpiment will give off a garlic smell due to its arsenic content and crumble into a dangerous power when exposed to light. It was used in the past as ochre paint and poisoned many an artist.
Cinnabar
Cinnabar (mercury sulfide) is an ore containing mercury. Pure mercury if heated causes tremors, loss of sensation and even death.
Other Minerals of "DO NOT" to use as elixirs or lotions.

Disclosure: The above list are the collective research of A to Z Minerals and Rock Shop, but do not serve as a guide to dangerous mineral usage. This is provided for public information only and STRONGLY suggest collectors to use caution and do additional research to determine the safety of their minerals. Mindat.org is a very useful site to explore the composites of your minerals.
